Where to stay, drink, and eat in Porto.
Porto has a very unique feel. It is a major city, full of tourists all year round, mainly because of its huge Port wine and Wine industry, along with its rich history. But it is also a creating a name as a culinary hot spot, with amazing places to eat scattered around the city.
Here is a little list from my Wishlist.
Where to stay
The Rebello, an SLH Hotel — housed in converted 19th-century warehouses on the Gaia riverbank, with a rooftop bar overlooking the whole of old Porto and a Roman-bath-style spa.
PortoBay Flores - right in the centre of Porto.
Vinha Boutique Hotel - a short drive away from the centre, but they have a daily boat that takes you up the river to town. Stunning grounds.
Forte de Gaia, Autograph Collection — a 5-star riverside stay on the Gaia side, surrounded by some of the region’s most prestigious port houses.
Vincci Ponte de Ferro — great positioning for views, right by the iron bridge.
Coffee and bakeries
IMiBa Artisanal Bakery - as in the name, baking is the game.
Protest Kitchen - yummy yummy.
Early - sourdough bakery and speciality coffee.
NOLA Kitchen — New Orleans-inspired brunch, a Porto favourite for weekend crowds.
A Certain Café - loved by locals, all day brunch concept.
Época - brunch style cafe
Hakko - known for their pastries, has been cited as a title price, but worth it.
Wine bars
If you came to Porto to drink, congrats — your options are close to limitless. Here are a few that might not already be on your radar. If you’re after port tastings specifically, head to the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the river. Kopke and Niepoort are my personal favourites — and don’t skip the white port.
Bar Aduela - sit here, order a drink, listen to the live music, and people-watch. *chefs kiss*
Catraio Craft Beer Shop & Bar - more casual, craft beer and beer-garden energy.
E Agora? - a cocktail bar that also serves meals.
Bar Ponte Pênsil - A bit touristy, but worth genuinely beautiful spot for a drink by the river watching the boats.
Dinner
Barôco - you can come just for a drink too, but book ahead either way.
Mistu -asian and south American food with a Portuguese twist.
Adega São Nicolau -hidden spot in the centre, that isn’t a tourist trap.
Angel’s Share - dinner on the fancier side.
Flow - trendy restaurant and bar that locals frequent.
Mito - Georgian-influenced menu, a bit of a hidden favourite.
Galeria de Paris - eclectic decor built from antiques, one of Porto’s most photographed interiors.
Casa Vicent - drinks, food, or both, always with atmosphere.
Shopping and sightseeing
Palácio da Bolsa — Porto’s opulent former stock exchange, now one of the city’s grandest interiors to visit.
Jardins do Palácio de Cristal — gardens with some of the best river views in the city, especially at sunset.
Galeria Municipal do Porto - Portos main Art gallery.
The Fleeting Room - cool shopping spot.
Porto Calling — a record store, great for vinyl hunting.
PATCH Lifestyle Concept Store - mix of small bits and pieces.
Mercado do Porto Belo — Saturday flea and antiques market.
Mercado Ferreira Borges and the riverside market — good for browsing and food stalls by the water.
